The United Nations General Assembly today elected Chile as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the period 2018 - 2020. Since its establishment in 2006, Chile has been a member of the above-mentioned body twice (periods 2008-2011 and 2012-2014).

The election of Chile is a recognition by the United Nations member states of Chile's leadership in the protection and promotion of human rights, reflected in the progress made at the national level and in our permanent interest in addressing pending challenges, both domestic and international.

Chile will participate in the Council with a constructive and dialogue-based approach, emphasizing the need for the progressive development of international human rights law and within the framework of its international obligations.

The Human Rights Council is composed of 47 members and is the intergovernmental body of the United Nations system responsible for the promotion and protection of all human rights. The Council has the power to consider situations of human rights violations and abuses, making recommendations in this regard. The sessions are held in Geneva, Switzerland.
