The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its Directorate for Environment and Ocean Affairs, organized a meeting of the Global Youth Pact and Climate Change, in partnership with the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, the French Embassy in Chile, and the Avina and Adapt-Chile organizations.

This activity was attended by more than 100 high school students from diverse districts and regions of the country including Chincolco, Talca, San Fernando, Santiago and Valparaiso.

The meeting included introductory presentations by academics from the Catholic University, Pablo Marquet and Marcelo Lagos, which were followed by discussions at thematic roundtables composed of young people themselves and facilitated by national climate change experts.

The roundtables worked around four questions, referring to what concrete actions can be taken from home, from school, from the district and from the country. At the end of the roundtable work, a document was prepared with recommendations and contributions that were presented to the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Edgardo Riveros, by youth representatives.

At the end of the day, Undersecretary Riveros said that "the importance of young people to face the challenge of climate change has been recognized by Chile at an international level and was recently endorsed with the government's announcement to incorporate a subject on climate change into the school curriculum".

In this regard, he recalled what President Michelle Bachelet said about "building a society that develops sustainably is largely dependent on education and training of environmentally conscious citizens".
