Minister

Alberto van Klaveren

Bachelor of Laws, University of Chile, Master of Arts in International Studies, University of Denver, United States, and Doctorandus in Political Science, University of Leiden, the Netherlands.

He served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1992 to 2019, as advisor to the Directorate General of Foreign Policy; Director of Planning; Ambassador of Chile to the European Union, Belgium, and Luxembourg; Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs in the government of President Michelle Bachelet (2006-2009), and Agent of Chile before the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

In the academic sphere, he is a professor at the Institute of International Studies and the Law School of the University of Chile, specializing in international relations and their ties to international law, comparative foreign policy, Chilean foreign policy, and European affairs. He has also served as deputy director of the Institute for European-Latin American Relations (IRELA); academic director of the Association for Research and Specialization on Ibero-American Issues (AIETI), and Professor at the Instituto Universitario Ortega y Gasset in Madrid, Spain.

Minister van Klaveren has edited and authored several books and academic articles on foreign policy, international relations and law, and comparative politics published in Latin America, the United States, and Europe.
