Undersecretary Gloria de Fuente inaugurates UN regional course on international law

The Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Gloria de la Fuente, inaugurated the United Nations Regional Course on International Law for Latin America and the Caribbean, which is being held at ECLAC headquarters in Santiago.

In her speech, she emphasised that "one of the great challenges we face has to do with strengthening an international legal order that guarantees the peaceful coexistence of States, the rule of law and the validity, protection and promotion of human rights".

"International law will be a reflection of the power of dialogue and the rule of law that highlights the promotion of cooperation, sustainable development and the need to work together to achieve a robust and up-to-date democracy that, above all, must be respected and promoted, even when its values may be subject to great pressures and threats," she added.

In this regard, the Undersecretary stressed that our continent has remained free of wars between States thanks to the use of international mechanisms as a form of peaceful dispute settlement and, in particular, our country is committed to developing a foreign policy in accordance with international regulations, multilateralism and the promotion of human rights.

"I cannot fail to stress the importance of developing international policies and regulations that meet the needs of all citizens, including women, who have historically been under-represented in the development or elaboration of international law," she said.

Finally, she called on the students to be relevant actors who contribute to perfecting the necessary institutional framework, as well as the legal instruments and tools to sustain peace and promote the development of just societies in order to face the common challenges on the global agenda.
